Kyungeun Jung

Hi, This is Kyungeun Jung(/ˈkjʌŋ.ʊn dʒʌŋ/)!

I am a second year Ph.D. student at HCI Tech Lab, advised by professor Sang Ho Yoon. My research spans across the domain of haptic interaction, haptic perception and wearable interfaces.

Nowadays, I am especially interested in Haptic Perception in periungual area for nail-mounted wearable interface and Adaptive Haptic Interaction to human behavior.

I continuously seek answers especially in Haptics interfaces regarding human ergonomics! Still creating some meaningful questions and answers, and hope to fulfill my research journey with lots of sparkling and creative ideas.

In my leisure time, I love to explore some sites to walk and enjoy the scenery of greeny trees 🌳.

[🇺🇸] My visiting research has begun! Collaborating with Professor Gerling and Dr. Kao, I will be working on an interface for motion guidance incorporating fingertip waterbed stimulation. I will be staying in Charlottesville until the first week of July!

[🎉🎉🎉] My research on ‘An AI-Based Haptic Framework for Enhancing Tactile Object Interactions in XR’ has been selected for the Research Grant for U.S. Visiting Women Researchers from the NRF(National Research Foundation of Korea). I will be joining the Gerling Touch Lab and working with Professor Gerling at UVA as a fully funded visiting researcher from January 2026 to July 2026.

🏆 Mo2Hap:Rendering VR Performance Motion Flow to Upper-body Vibrotactile Haptic Feedback

We introduce a unique haptic rendering framework that transforms the performer’s actions into wearable vibrotactile feedback for an immersive virtual reality (VR) performance experience. To capture essential movements from the virtual performer, we propose a method called Motion Salient Triangle. Motion Salient Triangle is a real-time 3D polygon that computes haptic characteristics (intensity, location) based on motion skeletal data. Here, we employ an entire upper-body haptic system that provides vibrotactile feedback on the torso, back, and shoulders. This haptic rendering pipeline enable audiences to experience immersive VR performance by accommodating the performer’s motions on top of motion-to-haptic feedback.

ThumbJoy:Using the Thumb’s Metacarpophalangeal Joint as a Joystick Input Device

We introduce ThumbJoy, which utilizes the physical movement of the left thumb metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint along with its psychophysical qualities as a joystick. Using an inertial measurement unit (IMU), ThumbJoy avoids the restraints of hand tracking occlusion, allowing more contact area for the thumb thus providing self-haptics. We first conducted a pilot study of 20 participants to systematically analyze the characteristics of the MCP joint. Using these results, we implemented an algorithm that converts joint movement to a planar 2D axis movement. We then conducted a user study comparing ThumbJoy with conventional interaction mediums in a virtual reality (VR) environment. Through this, we demonstrate that ThumbJoy can provide an intuitive method of control while increasing immersion and enjoyment in VR along with the use of self-haptics.
